ARTIST STATEMENT
As a visual artist, tangible objects are my preferred way of thinking about ideas and frequently they provide a quiet clarity that the noise of conversation misses.
My career in architecture has provided a lens through which I look at shape, pattern and shadow prior to considering material selections. Beginning with the simple square, triangle and circle, all forms evolve. My work with many talented artisans during the construction of buildings has fostered my respect for the materials chosen to implement designs.
Each series focuses on specific cultural realities as I see them. Although I prefer abstracts, I often try to add a recognizable element or shape as an entry point. Depending on where I am in creating the series, this element may be more or less visible. And I work with a variety of mediums because it keeps me enthusiastically returning to the studio every day.
