The Box Collaborative was a round robin with 12 artists working in various mediums living throughout the USA. The focus was the limit of materials. Each artist chose a number between 1 – 12 and
to start, created a box with that number of materials, i.e. Box 1 was made from only one material, through to Box 12 which had to use 12 materials. Each artist contributed one piece of art for each of the
12 boxes as they received them in turn, and had one month to do so. The art per box could only use the number of materials correlating to the number of the box. Two weeks was allowed for shipping which added to the length of time for the round robin.
The Box
- Each artist will have chosen a number between one and twelve. This will represent the number of materials that must be used in creating the box as well as the limit of materials each artist uses to make their artwork contribution for that box number.
- The materials in the box can be different
from those chosen for the artwork. - The size of the box has one definition only. It must have a clear interior height of not less than six inches. The height can be greater than six inches. The other two box dimensions are at the artist’s discretion. The box must have a cover.
- The artist’s selection of number for their
box is determined by the timing of affirmative response to the initial email. - Adhesives and fixatives are not considered materials.
- Different colors of the same material
must be counted separately - Each artist will create the first entry for their box using only the number of materials allowed for that box.
example: Box FOUR: Four materials must be used in the creation of the box, e,g, Davy board, cloth, paper and one color of ink. Four materials must be used in the creation of the art within the box. If three inks are used on one paper, four materials have been used. If two of the originating inks are mixed creating another color, still, only four materials are
counted
The Journal
- AEG will forward a journal to each artist.
- It must accompany the box on its round
robin journey. - The journal will make it easy for people to
add entries either by handwriting, tipping in or three hole punching computer generated thoughts. - Entries may consist of anything the artist
wishes to share. - Journal entry is not required.
- Writing does not have to be polished.
- The purpose of the journal is to make the
collaboration more complete; to allow each of us to grow through this process.
