Folding paper, or adding paper elements pleases the ordered
sensibilities I favor. However, the limitations of order can be confining.
During my years of teaching art through craft, origami was used as platform. The art of precision folding was not for everyone. However, learning to look at a finished origami piece and translate that form into a drawing on paper, provided some of the students with a way to look at art more carefully.
Unit origami is a way of using individual origami elements to create a larger finished piece.
Paper sculpture is another way of taking individual flat elements and then assembling them to create an object. The flat elements may have designs cut out of them, and art work added on them and then shaped by rolling or folding.
